Mindfulness is a mental practice that enhances paying undivided attention to the present moment without judgment. These mindfulness practices are incredibly beneficial not only for the mental well-being of individuals but also for families, larger communities, and the overall mental health of our society. They encourage children to gain awareness of the present; they are shown how to observe their body sensations, they are motivated to recognise their feelings, and they are allowed to fully live their emotions. There are thousands of evidence-based studies that reveal the wide range of benefits of mindfulness:
Certainly, these reasons mentioned above explain why mindfulness trainings are now offered in organisations as diverse as Google, Starbucks, the United Nations, the World Bank, the British Parliament, and in several public schools in Europe and in the United States.
Although these amazing benefits are crucial for mental-wellbeing, at KidPower we highlight the importance of mindfulness in becoming more aware of our own emotions, thoughts, and sensations. We believe that supporting children to develop the skill of recognising their own emotions will help them to acknowledge the emotions of others. This is the key to developing empathy, and empathy is the pillar of emotional intelligence. If children can learn and practice this complex ability from a young age, they will be naturally predisposed to kindness, compassion, and tolerance.
